Synopsis[]

Natsuki and her friends Miou Aida and Akari Hayasaka walk to school together and ask Natsuki about her most recent accomplishment: confessing to her childhood friend Yu. The incident she recounts is told in a flashback sequence: After gathering up her courage, Natsuki confesses her love to Yu when classes end. When Yu shows seeming confusion, Natsuki quickly rescinds her confession and says that she was "only joking", and convinces him that she was practicing for a real confession. Yu, who mutually has a crush on Natsuki, then shoots back that he may be serious about her, before dropping the subject and going out to eat ramen. Natsuki comes with him too, but is made to pay for both their meals. This conversation then transitions into a general love talk concerning all three girls. Miou talks about her crush, Haruki Serizawa, and how neither of them have made a move on each other despite walking home together every day; while Akari is not sure who she likes, but is teased with the prospect of dating classmate Sota Mochizuki. At school, we turn to Sota instead. He is initially preoccupied with his internal struggle to confess to Akari, his crush, but talks himself out of it because he feels unworthy of her. Just as he is about to enter class, he runs into a classmate of his who made a physical change: Koyuki Ayase. Where Koyuki was previously teased for his effeminate features and long hair, he is now fawned over by many girls in school after acquiring a more masculine haircut. Sota is shocked by the sudden change, and fears that Akari will also be drawn to him, before noticing Koyuki's longing stare at Natsuki and realizing his sudden physical change is the result of a crush. Time moves on to PE, where the boys and girls are separated into soccer (boys) and tennis (girls). The girls end up having a talk about their ideal man, with Akari specifically saying that she doesn't have a "type" she likes. Sota, overhearing this, is elated that he has a chance with her, but is distracted by an incoming soccer ball and has to be taken to the nurse's office by his friends. A sequence covering the rest of the year up to winter starts. Natsuki goes on to "practice confess" to Yu multiple times, while Miou and Haruki struggle to overcome their shyness and progress their romantic relationship. One day, while Natsuki and her girl friends have one of their usual discussions on the rooftop, Koyuki comes up to her with tickets for a concert of a band they both like, and asks her if she wants to go with him. While Natsuki happily agrees to the invitation, Miou and Akari are wary; they warn her that his offer may not just be an outing between friends, but rather a date. Natsuki brushes them off. When Natsuki gets dressed and leaves for the concert, she and Yu have a spat. Yu is jealous and doesn't want her to go, while Natsuki, who sees the outing as strictly platonic, is hurt that Yu seemingly doesn't recognize how much she loves him. She goes on to have a nice time at the concert with Koyuki, but the subject comes back to romance after they leave. While Koyuki walks her home, he boldly embraces her and attempts to confess to her. Yu, coming to pick Natsuki up, interrupts the moment and has a verbal spat with Koyuki. After seeing her good friend and crush fight over her, Natsuki begins to cry, which makes the boys back down and leads Yu to take her home the rest of the way. Natsuki later has a flashback sequence showing how she came to love Yu, and resolves to make the confession she is planning for the next day her last "practice" confession. The day of, she cakes her face in makeup, making Miou and Akari fix it up before heading off to school. Koyuki, meanwhile, has a run-in with Sota at lunchtime, and they talk at length about their one-sided crushes. Now knowing that he has no chance with Natsuki, Koyuki pushes Sota to tell his crush his feelings before it's too late, spurring Sota into asking Akari to meet him at 4:00 PM after school - their second major conversation together. There, Sota asks Akari if he isn't "good enough" for her, which she denies confusedly. While she doesn't currently consider him romantically, she does offer to go to a pastry shop together with him, which he accepts. Natsuki makes her last "practice" confession after school, a short and simple admission of feelings. Yu, disappointed, then turns to leave, but Natsuki then pours out her real feelings in a desperate, tearful confession. Yu at first is surprised, but then laughs relieved, finally admitting his mutual crush on her. Accepting her confession, they embrace. Hina, a floor below them, is shown waiting worriedly with a letter in hand, setting up her plot for the next movie. After the credits sequence, a scene of their relationship post-coupling plays. Their relationship more or less stays the same as it always did, but Yu is finally able to say "I love you" to his girlfriend.

Trivia[]

  • sana appears as the lead singer for HoneyWorks during the concert scene. The HoneyWorks band members Gom, shito, AtsuyuK!, Oji, and cake also make cameos as her backing band.
  • During the scene where Natsuki and Hina are playing games, a PlayStation 4 can be spotted as the console, along with the game played being LittleBigPlanet 3. The same game would later show up in the second movie.

Differences from Other Adaptations[]

  • Koyuki and Natsuki's bonding points are changed from the light novel and song series to the movie. While they do enjoy much of the same music as shown in the movie, their primary bonding point was manga, and thus his date with her changes from a manga signing event to a HoneyWorks concert. This change is retained in HoneyWorks Premium Live
  • While Koyuki still gives up on dating Natsuki after their concert date in HoneyWorks Premium Live, Koyuki does not have a spat with Yu while taking Natsuki home, and Koyuki never actually manages to confess that night. He still realizes that Natsuki likes Yu more, but that is because she gushes about his kindness to Koyuki.
  • Unlike the novel version, the subplots about Natsuki's artistic hobby, the paintings used for Haruki's final school project, and the drama concerning Natsuki and Haruki's practice confessions are excised.
  • The bath scene in the animated version of "Kokuhaku Yokou Renshuu" extends some scenes, particularly Yu's.
  • Unlike the novel version and short story, Koyuki is not being chased by admirers before he goes to have lunch with Sota.
  • In no version of Sota's character arc outside of this movie series does he have a representation of a devil as his negative/jealous thoughts.
